New biodiesel plant in Bulgaria

Martin, Slovakia - Effective and flexible system of transport is an essential tool for contemporary economics and quality of life. Enormous growth of transport however brings major problems, which negatively affect environment as well as health of the population, especially in large cities. The sector of transport is the largest consumer of energies as well as the largest producer of gases causing greenhouse effect. In the course of 1990’s, a significant improvement in automotive fuels quality in automobile technologies has been achieved. These technologies considerably cut the volume of emissions.

 
 

Other important factor to find alternative solution for is the dependence of European countries on crude oil imports. One of the possible solutions is to make a greater use of alternative fuels, especially renewable ones, which may support agriculture.

It is very important that majority of cars driven nowadays are able to run on fuels with volume of bio-components. New development in technologies will also allow the use of higher share of bio-components. This approach is significantly positive in respect to environment.

Support of bio-fuels usage should become the next step towards a wider bio-mass use. Such a policy could create new opportunities for a sustainable regional development and for opening a new market of innovation for agricultural products.

As known from the Directive 2003/30/EC, member states are relatively flexible in choosing the strategy to implement the Directive into practice. The Directive key points can be considered to be as follows:

- to identify the present and future automotive fuels consumption level
- to identify the national potential of bio-components production, its limitations or possible challenges for further development
- to identify the specific characteristics of the national automotive fuels market in relation to the car-park structure, climate conditions, tax system, or other important factors.

EU should prepare and implement projects aimed at support of alternative energy resources use in the long-term horizon.

20 000 tons of methyl esters a year are produced from the sunflower and rapeseed oils at the new biodiesel production plant in Bulgaria. G-phase, as by-product of transesterification reaction, will be used for energy utilization at the site.
